How can I prevent and treat wrinkles?

You can avoid wrinkles and premature aging through preventative measures such as using sun protection and certain anti-aging creams. Pre-existing wrinkles can be treated through topical skincare products (e.g., retinoids), neuromodulators (e.g., Botox), and dermatologic procedures (e.g., lasers, microneedling).

The best way to avoid wrinkles is to slow their formation. The main structural proteins within our skin that give the skin elasticity and firmness are collagen and elastin. As we age, the natural amount of collagen within our skin decreases, which is exacerbated by sun exposure. In order to combat this, it is important to avoid external factors that further decrease collagen stores and use skincare that can boost collagen production.

One of the main offenders for collagen breakdown is UV radiation from the sun. This type of damage can be avoided with regular use of sunscreen and sun protective clothing.Treatment of wrinkles include certain topical formulations such as retinoids, which boost collagen production, neuromodulators (like Botox) which temporarily paralyze the muscle to prevent wrinkle formation, and dermatologic procedures (like lasers and microneedling) which also increase collagen production.

Remember, wrinkles are a normal part of aging and signify that we have lived a healthy and happy life. Most treatments are meant to soften their appearance but not entirely eliminate them.

It's never too early or too  late to begin incorporating anti-aging ingredients into your skincare routine. Remember, prevention is the key to keeping your skin looking its best; however, there are always treatment options once wrinkles form as well.

Doctor's Note

Sunscreen is the most important product to prevent and treat wrinkles.

Once wrinkles form, topical treatments, injections, and dermatologic procedures can help soften their appearance.

Remember, aging is a gift and healthy skin should always be the primary goal!
